How does The Safety SleeperTM differ from other enclosed beds?
Of course there are other enclosed beds, and there are other portable beds. But in contrast to sterile looking medical beds or flimsy tent beds, no other product combines all of the features like The Safety SleeperTM does.
The Safety SleeperTM is
– light-weight
– portable
– enclosed
– durable
– stable
– easily assembled/disassembled (no
tools required!)
– safe
– and provides a fun
and friendy safe zone for kids and adults of all ages.
After several years, The Safety SleeperTM was awarded a US patent confirming that it is a truly unique and innovative bed (patent number: US 7,971,596 B2).
How do I know The Safety SleeperTM bed will keep my child safe?
We built and designed The Safety SleeperTM for our own son, Abram. We have used the bed since the summer of 2008. For the construction of the bedframe and canvas, we use only safe, high-quality materials, and each Safety SleeperTM is inspected personally before being shipped. Based on our personal experience and feedback from families who have used The Safety SleeperTM, we have continuously improved the bed to ensure our and your child’s safety.

How do I know my child will like his or her Safety SleeperTM?
While every child is different and there is no way to know for sure, most children love to be enclosed and love that secure feeling. The Safety Sleeper'sTM boundaries help the child feel safe and secure. With reducing the stimulation in a room, it also has a calming effect on the child. We have observed that our son Abram now likes to go to his Safety SleeperTM in the middle of a tantrum or difficult emotional time to calm himself - and when this happens, we DO NOT zip it up. He goes in and comes out freely.

Phil R. from Boston, MA, contacted us after his son was diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome and wouldn't stay in a typical bed. Since the grand-dad had built a wooden fire engine bunk bed, we created a custom canvas to fit into this cool bed.
How big is The Safety SleeperTM?
The Safety SleeperTM can be customized to any size mattress (our standard sizes are twin and full). The bedrame is positioned between the mattress and box spring, the tent-linke canvas structure is 40" tall.

This
Safety SleeperTM encloses a twin sized mattress.
Is The Safety SleeperTM portable? How long does it take to set up?
Yes! The Safety SleeperTM can be assembled and taken down within 5 minutes, no tools required, making it ideal for traveling. The total weight of the bedframe and canvas is less than 30 lbs. When on the road, we suggest to exchange your standard mattress with an air mattress.

The Safety SleeperTM comes with a sturdy bag made out of the same colored canvas, allowing for easy transportation.
How do I care for my Safety SleeperTM?
The bedframe and screen covering of The Safety SleeperTM is made of heave-duty, industrial-grade materials. You can either spot-clean the canvas, take it outside and hose it down or put it in the (preferable front-loading) washing machine. We would recommend to use an industrial size washer, like at a laundromat. Do not use bleach!
When flying, is the The Safety SleeperTM considered checked luggage or carry on?
The Safety SleeperTM comes in a bag for easy transport.
When we fly, we check this bag as luggage. We usually have to take it to the oversized luggage department similar to what guys do with their golf bags. I did learn that if you are flying an airline that charges for bags, all you need to do is notify them this is medical equipment for a special needs child/person and they will not charge for that bag. If you come across someone who doesn't understand or is unfamiliar with this and tries to charge you, ask for supervisor. I got our charges refunded plus a future credit after being charged by someone less knowledgeable.

The Safety SleeperTM and bag weigh less than 30 lbs.
How easy is it to pack and unpack The Safety SleeperTM in a hotel room?
The Safety SleeperTM is as easy to set up as most pack 'n plays. It is about twice the length of a pack 'n play but fits easly in every hotel room I've ever stayed in. The Safety SleeperTM frame breaks down into six sections: the base splits into four sections and the top splits into two halves.
All sections slide together and lock in place. The top connects to the base with pullpins, so no tools are required for assembly. Then, the canvas/screen pouch zip onto the frame. The entire system can be assembled in a few minutes.

The pictures shows The Safety SleeperTM our son Abram sleeps in when we travel. On a recent trip to Splash Lagoon near Erie, PA, we set it up in a hotel room next to the pack 'n play for Abram's sister Macy.
Will The Safety SleeperTM enhance my family's flexibility or ability to travel?
When we designed the bed in 2008, we were at a crossroad. We realized that if something drastic didn't happen, we would not be traveling for quite a while... and that just wasn't an option. For us, it was a scary and daunting prospect to be stuck at home and never travel again. Today, we use The Safety SleeperTM on a weekly basis for family activities, like going to a friend's house to watch a hockey game that may go late. We just set the bed up and put our son to bed. Typical families do this sort of thing all the time, but when you have a special sleeping situation it becomes a whole new level of stress. Thanks to The Safety SleeperTM, we were able to enjoy great trips and vacations together as a family - to Texas, Jamaica, Niagara Falls and Disneyworld.

At a recent family reunion, we setup the
The Safety SleeperTM next to the pavillion in the park.
Does Medicaid and/or insurance pay for The Safety SleeperTM?
Unfortunately, only on occasion and not automatically. Regulations in each state and for each insurance company are different. We'll help and advice families when negotiating reimbursement with their insurance companies, check out our Reimbursement Flyer. We recommend to follow our guidelines to having your letter/s of medical necessity written closely. Make sure to be clear that an enclosed and safe bed is medically and NOT behaviorally necessary for your child, or show that his or her behaviors are life threatening. Insurances first route is to deny your request. If you get denied, appeal, reapply, ask to be seen or heard by the supervisor. Many times when The Safety SleeperTM has been paid by insurance it was because the human factor came to play: A supervisor recognized the need and the cost efficiency of this bed versus medical/hospital grade beds (which are not portable). Call local Durable Medical Equipment companies in your area and ask if anyone there is familiar with your child's diagnosis and need for enclosed beds. Get the top person at your work to help if that's possible, i.e. union president, insurance liaison etc. Those positions sometimes have more pull with the insurance companies. This of course does not apply for Medicaid. See if there is a state advocate agency in your state to help with insurance issues. In PA, call the Pennsylvania Health Law Project at 800-274-3258, or visit WWW.PHLP.ORG.
Where can I get financial help to purchase The Safety SleeperTM?
One of the biggest obstacles that prevents families from owning The Safety SleeperTM is money. Knowing this, we have tried to reduce the production cost as much as possible without sacrificing safety and quality.
